CAPO has a long and illustrious set of Award Winners dating back to the early 1980s. At present this page concentrates on the most recent winners but if you keep referring back we will reward you with an ever-growing list of winners that reveals the raison d’etre behind CAPO and our longevity.

Below is a list of CAPO Grant Recipients from 2022.

 
  • CAPO Fellowship

    CAPO’s most prestigious award was presented by Trent Birkett, Acting Director, National Portrait Gallery to multidisciplinary artist Mariana del Castillo who will be the 2022 CAPO Fellow. Marianna plans to use the fellowship to develop textile and paper wall constructions exploring the marks left by industry on the landscape for exhibition at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery and NERAM 2023

  • Mandy Martin Art & Environment Award

    The inaugural Mandy Martin Art & Environment Award went to Anna Madeleine Raupach who will use the award for her project, The Forecast Factory which will explore the interconnections between satellite imagery, weather prediction, and communication systems in the context of climate change. This award was partially funded by Climarte and the family of Mandy Martin.

  • Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial Award

    The Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial Award has been presented to Nicola Dickson to develop and produce a diverse body of artworks for exhibition at Wagga Wagga Regional Gallery concerning the extensive loss of box gum grassy woodlands. The Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial Award is funded by The Tall Foundation.

  • The Tall Foundation Award

    The Tall Foundation Award was awarded to Brian Foong who will use the award towards an arts/science residency at SymbioticA consisting of research and mentorship in wet biology practices to develop new work.

  • Robert Foster Memorial Award

    The Robert Foster Memorial Award was presented to Sean Booth to pursue the development of a new range of titanium jewellery for limited run production, adorned with intricate surface features produced using CNC machining techniques. The Robert Foster Memorial Award is funded by TSA.

  • Craft ACT Outstanding Practice Award

    The Craft ACT Outstanding Practice Award was given to Ximena Natanya Briceño to complete a new body of work where colour, materials and iconography are key elements in the exploration of new works.

  • Shaw & Partners Award

    The Shaw and Partners Award went to Yusuke Takemura to support the acquisition of materials and tools to develop new innovative carved glass works and explore his artistic research outcomes at his home studio.

  • Belco Arts Inclusion Award

    The Belco Arts Inclusion Award went to John Brookes who will use it towards a satirical exhibition which will challenge media disability portrayals, matching modern research with Propaganda poster designs used in 1930s to 1950s. Exploring perceptions as ‘victims’, ‘heroes’ and ‘villains’.

  • Capital Chemist Award

    The winner of the Capital Chemist Award was Madisyn Zabel who will use the award to develop and document new work for an upcoming exhibition at Craft ACT in 2023.

  • Canberra Weekly Award

    The Canberra Weekly Award was presented to Hannah Gason to purchase specialist lighting equipment and materials to develop new installation works.

  • Entice Travel & Performance Awards

    There were two winners of the Entice Travel & Performance Award this year. The first was given to the Luminescence Chamber Singers and the second to Juliet Moody.

    Luminescence Chamber Singers will use the award for the development of a new work for vocal ensemble, children's choir, and piano, which responds to Australian artworks by women.

    Juliet Moody will use the award to film the creation process of a new touring show to release as a short documentary, highlighting comedy as a voice for change.

  • Workplace Research Associates Award

    The Workplace Research Associates Award went to Lee Leibrandt to weave a series of tapestries that document observation and experience of place at a range of sites within Australia, including the ACT.

  • Creations of Manuka Award

    The Creations of Manuka Award went to S.A Adair whose project explores the sculptural processes of casting and embossing to capture impressions of the natural environment, creating an immersive installation using sustainable materials.

  • Cook Creative Writing Prize

    The Cook Creative Writing Prize was awarded to Lucy Alexander to produce a finished collection of prose poetry that explores her experience of loss from my parent's dementia.

  • Urban Pantry Manuka Emerging Artist Award

    The Urban Pantry Manuka Emerging Artist Award went to Michael Lawrence-Taylor who will produce a short documentary about a shark attack survivor facing her fears and fighting for marine conservation in the boxing ring.

  • Craft ACT Emerging Artist Award

    The Craft ACT Emerging Artist Award went to Jonathon Zalakos who will use the award to purchase hammer forming equipment which will maintain his jewellery practice after graduating from the ANU.

  • Boris Property Emerging Artist Award

    The inaugural Boris Property Emerging Artist Award went to Alison Ford. Development and printing of wildflower photographs taken in Western Australia for use in a future exhibition.

  • Home by Holly Emerging Artist Award

    The inaugural Home by Holly Emerging Artist Award went to Melinda Heal to create new large-scale dyed works using katazome on layered paper, exploring the interaction between ‘weeds’ and ‘native plants’ on Canberra’s environmental edges.

  • All Insure Emerging Artist Award

    The first winner of the All Insure Emerging Artist Awards was Molly Kamenz. Molly plans to create a series of multi-plate etchings of nature street trees in Canberra (with a focus on Eucalyptus blakelyi and Eucalyptus mannifera).

  • All Insure Emerging Artist Award

    The second winner of the All Insure Emerging Artist Awards was Lea Durie. Lea will develop a body of work which responds to the impacts of development and changing land use on climate change.

  • All Insure Emerging Artist Award

    The third winner of the All Insure Emerging Artist Awards was Solomon Karmel-Shann. Solomon will use materials to make canvases to give control over canvas shape/quality.
